America's long-awaited return to the moon with the Artemis II launch on Wednesday is just a first step towards transforming Earth's neighbor into a gateway for deep space exploration, a key lawmaker has revealed.

After a journey of more than a week, the Orion spacecraft splashed down safely off the coast of California on Saturday, carrying its four-person crew back from a historic lunar flyby, the first time astronauts have travelled beyond low Earth orbit since the Apollo era.
